Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that I have been using as a sugar substitute for about 6 months now, and LOVE it! It bakes well substituting across exactly, and has no weird flavors, it just sweetens! It is not the cheapest option out there, so I often use half Xylitol and half other sweeteners like Splenda (the less healthy alternative) or Stevia (the less yummy alternative)
PLEASE NOTE that sweeteners usually have other fillers added to them and can slow down your weight loss. Trust me on this, I totally gained all my weight back once I learned how to do all the yummy sugar free desserts and ate them all the time 😛 Even Xylitol can slow down your weight loss! Check this post for more on sweeteners and HG. (you have to be subscribed to guaigroup to read this)
Please note that Xylitol, like all sweeteners can give stomach upset if eaten too much! Some people get stomach upset from Xylitol, mostly because they think they can substitute straight across from their LOADS of sugar they eat everyday, and of course that will make you sick. But you CAN build up to be able to eat quite a bit without any difficulty at all with time. I struggle with stomach problems, IBS etc, and I can eat it just fine 🙂 But the point here is to eat HEALTHIER and eating a little less than you normally do of sweets is always a good plan! 🙂
There has recently been a lot of hoopla about XyliTOL and other TOL type sweeteners. And while I appreciate the desire to be as healthy as possible, their idea of a healthy alternative is pure sugar… REALLY? I’m sorry, you are NOT going to convince me with Hypoglycemia that Sugar is better for me than Xylitol! lol 😀 Everyone has to make their own choices, so make sure you do your research and decide if this is important enough for you. Hypoglycemia does terrible things to me and is WELL WORTH it for me to stay with my Xylitol! 🙂
What do YOU use for sweeteners when you can’t have sugar?
Here is a quote from 10 Health Benefits of Xylitol
Xylitol “has been recognized by dentists and health professionals worldwide as a great alternative to white sugar.
Commonly found in chewing gum and breathmints, Xylitol is known to have a many health benefits associated with its use.
1. Safe For Diabetics
Unlike sugar, xylitol is not easily converted to fat. Because it is not easily converted to fat, it has almost no effect on insulin levels, making it a safe sugar alternative for diabetics, body builders, dieters, pregnant/nursing women, and also for babies and children.
2. Helps Prevent Cavities
Since it is a non-fermentable sugar, it cannot be converted to acid by oral bacteria. Thus, the alkaline-acid balance in the mouth is maintained, which helps in preventing cavities.
3. Helps Prevent Ear Infections
Xylitol can also be used as medicine in prohibiting certain bacterial growth to help prevent ear infections in young children. It will also help clear out earwax and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the pharyngotympanic tubes, connecting the nose and ear.
